Rescue Dogs:
I started volunteering with the city animal shelter in 2011. Since then, I have met thousands of homeless dogs, made over a hundred videos to aid in their adoptions, and heard the question, "Why don't you just take him home? He seems like your dog already," too many times to count. What I have learned and continue to re-learn through this work is that dogs are mirrors of society: they show us our unfortunate tendency to reach for what is attractive (a new puppy, a wet nose) and give back what seems inconvenient (the need for training, stability, attention, affection, respect). But these animals also remind us of our potential to be companions and leaders: stable, compassionate, prepared, and dedicated. Shelters are not last stops for second-rate pets; shelters are safety nets for living beings who are unbelievably caring, loyal, and unique. I have fallen in love so many times over the years. Here are a few of my favorite dogs -- some of whom found deserving homes, some of whom live on only in memory. |
